Understanding Porn Addiction Therapy

This is a difficult question to answer. I know, you think the answer is a simple yes or no; it should be an easy result from your quick internet search for help. But here’s the problem. Porn addiction therapy, the name itself, is a misnomer, and so your search for help might give results that you don’t want or need.

Why “Porn Addiction” Isn’t What You Think

Here’s why – “Porn addiction” isn’t what you think it is. Consequently, the help you are seeking by typing in this query won’t be the help you end up getting.

My Experience with Addiction Coaching

In my capacity as one of the Co-Founders and Co-authors of The Freedom Model for Addictions, Escape the Treatment and Recovery Trap, I’ve been coaching people for struggles with pornography, sex, substances, drinking, gambling, eating disorders, etc., for more than 34 years now. In that span of time and experience, I’ve come to realize that what people think they need, and what they actually need, are two very different things.

Why Searching for “Porn Addiction Therapy Near Me” Isn’t the Solution

When someone searches the web, “is there porn addiction therapy near me?” I assume they are in a bad place struggling with their habit, and are wasting an inordinate amount of their time and emotional resources surfing porn sites, masturbating, and feeling broken and “addicted” as a result. So know that I’m not being dismissive of your struggle here. I just don’t want you going down the internet goose chase receiving typical recovery industry results that won’t, in the end, solve your issue.

You Don’t Have an Addiction – You Have a Habit

Here’s the fact: You don’t have an addiction. This isn’t a small point. You have a preference that you’ve built based on the meaning and value that you personally have placed in your habit with porn. A habit can change, and it takes your struggle out of the “I’m addicted and broken” category, and places it in the “I can change and then move on from this habit” bin. That’s a huge difference!

The Mythology of Porn Addiction

Like substance use habit mythology, much of the folklore with PMO issues centers around the biochemical argument that you are run by your brain’s biochemistry. Also, like the common folklore surrounding substance use habits, there is the idea that porn is inherently irresistible (like drugs supposedly are) and that orgasm is also inherently irresistible, and that both have the power to enslave and addict you.

The Nuances of Porn Addiction and Orgasm

You might be thinking, “Of course orgasm is inherently irresistible!” And we might even agree with you if it weren’t for that small word, nuance. While we definitely agree that orgasms feel good (to the vast majority of people) – that is nature’s way after all – how one gets to that place where orgasm occurs is a different story entirely, and this is the nuance that actually matters here.

Is There Effective Porn Addiction Therapy?
