One of the most common misunderstandings of The Freedom Model approach to solving an addiction and making a lasting change is that it requires willpower. In this podcast Freedom Model co-developers Steven Slate, Mark Scheeren and Michelle Dunbar answer an important question from a reader. He states: “All my previous attempts to change have been motivated by avoided costs, and while that may be sufficient to initiate a change, my willpower cannot overcome my preference to continue problematic usage. Would you discuss why avoided cost is a poor motivator and why meaningful change appears so complex.”
